My 5 Favorite Devotionals

Last week, I shared with you all that I’m taking a step back from devotionals and diving into the Word. However, I do have several favorite devotionals that I do still pick up every so often to supplement my scripture reading. Even after using some of these devotionals for, well, years now, there’s still something new to learn every time I pick it up. I know a lot of us try to find new ways to learn more about Jesus, so I figured I would share some of my favorite devotionals or books that I think you might enjoy.
New Morning Mercies - Paul David Tripp
This is my go-to devotional. I’ve used it for the last two years, and I love that it is a year-long devotional. It serves as a daily reminder to me that I am in constant need of grace, and convicts me when I’m serving the kingdom of self, and not the kingdom of God. Each devotion is one page long, so it’s easily done in a few minutes, but the best part is it references a solid chunk of scripture to accompany each devotion. This one devotional is the definition of “daily bread”, as it gives you enough scripture to understand the context, and gives your heart something to focus on for the day.
Crazy Love - Francis Chan
This is not a devotional, but if you haven’t read it yet, here’s your sign. This book changed the way I see God and the way I see myself. It really opened my eyes to catch a glimpse of the majesty of God and how great His love is for us. It’s not long, and it has videos that you can watch with each chapter to break it up and let you work through it in your own time.
Grace For The Moment - Max Lucado
I’ve been a big fan of Max Lucado ever since I was very young, and my mom would read us Alabaster’s Song every Christmas. This devotional is a short little piece of wisdom for every day, and is meaningful, yet easy to understand. I bought this one for Elliot, but I snag it every so often because it’s just that good.
97 - Justin Lookadoo
Admittedly, this book was written for teenagers, but that doesn’t mean it’s not applicable to all ages. It is also not exactly a devotional, but it could be if you try hard enough. This book is 97 different “devotions”, one could say, and each is it’s own little story that takes a piece of scripture and brings it to life. Also, Justin is hysterical. Several of the devotions make me laugh out loud every single time I read it, and I’ve read it so many times, my book is falling apart.
The Love Language Minute Devotional - Gary Chapman
I picked up this devotional on a whim when Elliot and I were engaged, and to this day, it’s one of our favorites. Whenever we have the opportunity to do devotions together, this is one that we always use. I’ve tried quite a few couples/marriage devotions, and none of them hold a candle to this one. It’s full of wisdom, tips for understanding each other and improving communication and ways to learn to love one another better.
BONUS:
The Christmas season just ended, but I picked up an Advent devotional by the author of New Morning Mercies. It’s called Come Let Us Adore Him, and it was really cool. It was longer than most devotions, but again, has a lot of scripture to dive into, as well as a way to incorporate your kids into your devotional time, which I thought was very cool.
I’d love to hear what devotions are your favorites - drop them in the comments below!
